Graduation

A culmination of the WEEP program for the graduates and a culmination of our week spent with these wonderful ladies.  We so enjoyed celebrating with them.  So much progress for them and so much more work to be done and also more ladies to be reached. The work is not done here! You can help! Be sure to connect with a team member to learn more about the programs and needs to be met.  HEART is a wonderful organization and just needs more voices to hear the stories.

Kibera Visit - Teaching Conference

Today we briefly visited the Kibera slum and their WEEP Center, then we went over to Ngong for a women's teaching conference.  We had an opportunity to see Dandora slum & Ngong slum earlier in the week, and Kibera really was the worst of them all.  Amazing to know that families call this place home and communities actually have a habitat here.

We were dropped off at the top where many store fronts are and we were told the bus could not drive down to the WEEP Center.  When we made the hike down, we realized why... The road is narrow and is mounds of garbage, with raw sewage/drainage running down the sides of the road.  It is a sight and smell that you can't quite describe.  Very humbling, shocking, and sad!

We've gotten to know these ladies over the week and our hearts break knowing that this is where they live.  No one should have to live in these conditions.  This is their normal!

After hiking back out of Kibera (think huge bowl community), we were off to Ngong for a Women's teaching conference.  Charmain, Sara, Bonnie, and Jeanne all shared on topics of studying God's word, forming a small group, how to be the mom God created you to be, and faith & trust.  The ladies well received the talks these our team gave.

At the end of the conference the ladies all received conference goodie bags that had a copy of Jesus calling, and they were most excited for the pen, candy, and sunglasses!!! Too funny the little things that  they were excited about.

Masai Mara Safari

Wow! Wow! And Wow!  Truly amazing for all of us.  A definite refuel and refresh day (thank you Amy) for all of us after the week being so full of experiences.  Our hearts have been full and we have endured a range of emotions from the week.  The safari was a great trip for a quick escape!

We had to keep pinching ourselves to check and see if this was real.  AMAZING! We saw every animal in the Lion King and then some :).  We also had the fun experience of sleeping in upgraded tents for the evening.

The pictures can only give you a glimpse.  I'm sure the team has lots to say about this experience soon on their personal blogs.

Enjoy!

Freedom for Girls Fundraiser

Today was a lovely fundraiser event that provided information about HEART's wonderful organization and their various projects, specifically Freedom for Girls.  Various dignitaries and prominent people living in Kenya attended the event.

This project focuses on getting school girls a year's supply of sanitary napkins, plus education on health and their bodies. Staff were finding out that Kenyan school girls were dropping out of school at alarming rates because they were missing so much school due to their monthly menstrual cycles.  They didn't have the education or resources for sanitary napkins and therefore would keep missing school and therefore falling behind in their school work.  For five US dollars, one girl is sponsored with a year's supply of sanitary napkins, education, and underwear.  Five dollars!!!!  Could we all cut back on one latte to help support one of these girls??

Staff Party

Today was a mental break from the heavy last few days.  Our team got to celebrate the wonderful staff at HEART by throwing them an appreciation party for all their hard work.  They had never had an event like this for them, so we were so happy to bless them!

We started off playing some games.  Jeanne then provided a wonderful thank you speech, followed by more games and a nice lunch.  It was great fun seeing the staff playing silly games like musical chairs and egg and spoon relay.  They even had good fun with the Luau theme!
